A crazy idea...

Postby Black Ice » 09-04-2013 01:52 PM

Hey guys, I haven't been around here in a while - been doing a ton of other things!

I've been thinking about making an iOS game but was also toying with an idea of a third person shooter instead. With BF4 and some other awesome FPS games on the horizon, I keep thinking of BHD and how there's no other game like it now. It's not pure nostalgia - it's a great game that tons of people like (look at its sales), but there aren't any others like it these days. I thought of how I'd do such a project, who to go to, etc. and after some thinking this place came to mind.

A few years ago I started working on a mod with Ziprock and a couple of other guys (werk71 I think his name was - he taught me almost everything about skinning and BHD modding, probably the best skinner in the community). It was a ton of fun, great people (Ziprock was fantastic to work with), but it just didn't work out because Novalogic wasn't releasing any new games (plus, I was headed off to school).

I'm rambling - let me cut to the chase. I think the action/shooter market is missing a third person shooter. I think with the rise of indie games in the last few years, this community could put together a great multiplayer game in the spirit of DF (namely BHD) and appeal to gamers that liked SOCOM on the PS2.

Benefits of third person include not having to make first-person weapons, arms, animations, etc.; a level of uniqueness to stand out in the crowd of generic shooters, etc.

Here's what I think would make this mod great: the ability to customize your character as much as you want. Boonies, helmets, bandana, scarf, etc. Only a handful of games allow this right now - Rainbow Six Vegas is the only one that comes to mind that does a good job, but people put stupid camouflages on and run around like neon lights.

Though I think customization would be a huge selling point, I don't think it should affect gameplay. I think it needs to be like BHD - arcadey run-and-gun action, another niche in the shooting market.

You know how sidescrollers have had a reemergence on mobile devices (and consoles and PCs recently)? It's time for the arcade shooter to do the same. None of this go prone and have better accuracy stuff - I'm thinking BHD 2.0 with more weapons, customization, etc.

It's an immense undertaking but one I'm capable and willing to organize it. That all being said - I think this has the potential to be marketed as a product. Steam, iOS, Android, PSN, Xbox Live - there are so many great outlets and I think we can do it. This would mean no borrowed assets or anything in that nature. With a small team, a shared favorite game, etc. I think we could do an awesome job... I'd love to design the levels if we could get a MED like BHD had.

What do you guys think?

as always i like the idea, but as always the biggest concern is commitment from others. i still map/mod almost daily for call of duty mainly cod4/cod5 if you would like to get together on team speak let me know the team i play with has a 24/7 team speak with a bunch of channels set up for mapping and stuff like that. i know a couple guys that may be interested a few of which played bhd. ts ip 66.55.149.29:9180 and pass is agexp if any one asks tell them i gave the ip and pass to you i get on ts around 9 pm or 10 pm eastern

i like the idea of a simpler fps. shooters these days are pretty complicated compared to anything nova put out in the past. while it adds a lot it also creates that niche for simple fps games where you just get in and shoot. would be cool to find something that plays like an old nova game with a decent online community.

Well guys, I am still pretty excited about this. I've started doing modeling and it's a blast. At the same time, I'm pretty daunted by one thing: programming. This is going to require an immense amount of programming, and I have very little interest in doing that. I'm not sure what the best way is to go about finding someone that can do it - if there's someone that would be willing to join a mod team if there was enough assets and the like to convince them it was legit, or if I'd have to pay for it (after looking up the cost of a programmer, it seems pretty outrageous).

I'm wondering if this is feasible? I have no doubt the content can be made; my concern lies with programming... what do you all think?
