I like it. Got a prehistoric look to it.
I don't know anything about terrains or how hard they are to make but this looks good.

Any way to run up to the top of the cone? looks almost to steap to get up there. and the color map seems a bit to bright in game, maybe make it more od green? besides that the volcano terrain is quite excelent and has great potential for maps.

you can get up to quite near the top to a secluded sniper point....
its not too bright ingame really, just looks lush :D, but its an easy fix, just adjust the saturation or the contrast of the color map,

anyway what do ya think of the 2d view? do you think this is a method that would be worth knowing/learning?

The height map has potential but I`m not going to lie m8.That colour map just makes me want to reach for my shades.
Too gourdy m8.Greens are a right git to get right.
Like I said the h-map has potential.Try dropping the contrast a gnat`s as the volcano or whatever is a little steep.
Would make a good " out of this world terrain"...I`d still lose or mellow the green though.;)
Having thought about it.That would make quite a good arctic terrain, with the right colour map of course;)

Looks to me like it's Death Valley. Maybe change the terrain to a desert texture? Might work a little better.
