Once they're decompressed... I think the quickest way of viewing 'em is with Irfanview:

http://www.irfanview.com/

You can download the plugins (for just about most gfx formats)
http://affiliates.digitalriver.com/z/3049/CD63144/

And away you go.

View them all as thumbnails/aslideshow or as a simple browser.

As far as telling you what they all do, well many are obvious...others you'll have to look at .3dis

holy shit man.. how long did that take...

what did you do to learn how to make concrete like that? here's what happens when I try:

Image

I didn't even mean to have the ridges like that. I just ended up making them after I couldn't get the effect I wanted, which was rust dripping down a metal sheet - basically the same thing you did, but instead of the concrete, metal.

are there any good tutorials?? the ones I found weren't that great for metal. They were simple and not that professional looking in the end, not even sourceblog had one I liked much...

I bump mapped it and tried adding rust but I don't think it worked out that well... seeing as I'm partially colorblind, lol

GJ Werk...real pretty and SO much better than the brickwork you had b4.

BTW Black ice...how are you adding your layers together...multiply, darken, etc? Sometimes a mixture brings out the best results...plus having a bank of really good textures to start off with makes a BIG difference.

Here's a quick 1 I put together 4 ya:

Using a base colour was happy with, I just worked on adding a few layers with different fx on...altering the way they blended together:

PSP used..but P/Shop has similar (if not better) features:
Image

End result: a 256x256 tileable (horizontally...) texture. 10 mins - 5 spent buggering about with blend modes...lol

Here's the original texture:

Try monkeying around with this with your existing texture.

Hmmm, I had seen the phrase "Blend layers" 1000x before and seen some mini tutorials werk had done on it as well. But what I had never realized was what you needed to make this work was a good texture.

Until now anything like this I've tried to make has been a texture done from scratch. I can't tell you how much better it is when you are using a photorealistic (or just photographed? Can't tell with that one!..) texture as opposed to something made in Photoshop.

I need to move around the areas of wear with some tiling techniques I know and see what I can do. Right now I just got done discoloring the red, it seemed a bit too bright.

But before that I need to go into the game and figure out what object I'm going to texture. I think I'll choose a DF1 bunker because of the texture it uses. Then I can decide which way I want the wear going, like in your pic turtle it's going down because it's meant for horizontal tiling, right?

Thanks for all the help :D

Are there any good websites for textures? I have tried Google Searching for Metal Textures before but nothing satisfactory came. Then I tried the same thing for concrete and there are some great results.

Go here:

Click on a type of texture and WAIT for it to load.

Click on the black area- click and hold to scroll

Click on image you want -then a larger better quality one will pop up.

BE PATIENT (I think they're on dial-up LOL)- some great stuff here.

http://www.animax.it/animax/Textures.htm

Good luck

BTW- photo real textures in a game can look odd, sometimes a simple over layer and blend help knock the edges off it a bit so that it doesn't stand out as being weird-looking.

first of all that took 15min... nothing big...

i posted the layers so you could see whats going on with the file...

Turtle-Zed hit the nail on the head, every layer in that texture is transparent with effects except bottom 2. the very bottom one is the original skin, its left the for guidelines, so i know where the ledge is...

the next up from bottom is not transparent because that is the basis for the new texture, everything above that is transparent enought to have a visual impact on the final skin,..

you want good textures: get a digital camera and walk around some industrial area and take a few hundred photos, in my BHD mod my graffiti is hidden all through the buildings, lots of the textures are places i ride my Bike by everyday... i buy real camo and take photos of it sometimes...

Use textures from ther games, they can be modded and mixed together... doing this can improve your layering skils...
