Doors.

Postby Steve-S » 11-03-2005 08:04 PM

I've been playing with doors lately trying to find out how to get multiple doors on a single item to work. It looks like the doors need to be numbered sequentially and be the last items in the model. I have a single wall (01 wall) and 5 doors (02 Door1,.... 06 Door5). In the OED I assign the animation register starting at DOOR00 and going through DOOR05. The doors all work independantly of each other. In the ITEMS.DEF file I have this.

begin "3 doors test"
id 20006
type building
graphic 3doors
ai_function door
move_function door
render_function door
open_rate .25
num_doors 5
interrupt_sound_id DOOR_OPN_MTL // door opening sound (ai_function door)
interrupt_sound_id2 DOOR_CLS_MTL // door CLOSING sound (ai_function door)
first_door 2
end

I started with 3 doors and that is why it's called 3 doors. I don't suggest using that open rate, I was playing around too see if values less than 1 were allowed. Trap door? :D The value for First_Door would be the item number of the first door. Also the docs (such as they are) that came with the OED say to number the attach point to relate to the item the door is attached to. Don't. Attach number should match door number:

01 Wall
02 Door1
~02 (pivot point for door1).

All 5 doors work great. It's kinda fun to run along and close all 5 in a row as with the .25 open_rate they close rather fast.

If you look through the ITEMS.DEF file you'll see there are entries for multiple doors on many buildings that either have no interior or have doors that are fixed open. Hotel, long city blocks and russian embassy all have multiple door entries. I think I have doors pretty well figured out (knock on wood).

Hey Steve, thanks for the tutorial but I am still having trouble with JOTR doors not working. Would you mind if I tried this sample of yours as we know it works.....I just want to see whether it's me or whether I have a mysterious problem with something creating models for JO.

I don't know if it works with JO or not. I'll see if I can get it zipped up and posted sometime this week and you can try it.

thanks, Steve for the files, however, no go....still will not work in JO. I cannot get the doors to open no matter what I try. I get the sounds of the door opening but I'm locked out. Maybe I'll just mod in a battering ram for doors....lol.
