Thanks for the heads up there. I checked out Leave No Man Behind some time ago- they are really aiming for a realistic experience of Operation Restore Hope. I spoke to one of the MOD leaders who said that Nova's BHD sucked a$$. LOL.
They've made some really nice looking models for it, but there's no sign of an imminent release.
I looked at World at War...and yes their MOD does appear to have large outdoor maps, but how large are they in reality? Screenies look good, but the eye can be deceived by clever use of angles and skyboxes.
I looked at the COD BHD mod too- this has now gone into retirement. The BF1942 MOD-Conflict in Somalia MOD has also stalled due to lack of interest and their servers have been taken down.

So there still appears a gap in the MOD market for a knockabout MOD with modern weapons, with a largely urban setting that has interesting, but not claustrophobic maps, a need for team play and gameplay that has appeal beyond a 3 minute round.

ok some faq's from valve

max map size in hammer
http://collective.valve-erc.com/index.php?faq=source_mod_faq&section=106159031874671600&question=106159074774468800

Mods can choose their own unit scale for the world. For example, 1 unit could be made to be equal to 1 foot, or to 1/10 of an inch. Physics will be adjusted accordingly, but collisions are only guaranteed to be accurate to 1/32nd of a unit.

What is the ratio of map units to real-life units?

Unlike in Half-Life 1, things in Half-Life 2 will look proper when created at a scale of 1:1 (1 unit = 1 inch). It will be much easier to reproduce real-world environments in Half-Life 2. Gordon currently still requires 33 units of clearance to pass through a space (though this also may be subject to change).

At that scale- it's about 416 metres. Not such a large space as I'd hoped. I was hoping for at least 1KM.

Turtle I think it's double what you said, it's +/-16384, which is 32768 units from one side to the other, and that's 46340 units diagonally. So using your calculation it'd be 832m from one side to the other, and that's assuming a scale of 1:1. Diagonally it's about 1.2km.

SharpEdge wrote:This is a fantastic idea guys, I know lots of people who'd play it, you can get HL2 for , and it'll run on more PC's than some other newer games (eg BF2). I for one haven't played BHD for 6 months, I now only play BF2 or games/mods on the Source engine.

Just to give you a heads up, there is a Somalia mod in progress, this is a post I did elsewhere about it a few weeks ago:

============================
Leave No Man Behind have recently released some new pics/renders from the mod.

Image Image Image

LNMB is a mulitiplayer mod that is based on Operation Gothic Serpent, the US military operation in Mogadishu, Somalia involving US Army Rangers, Delta Force and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment(SOAR), the Somali Habr Gidr Clan Militia (Somali Nation Alliance) and Somali civilians. Players will choose to play as either an American Soldier or a Somali Militant.

============================
You probably already know this, but a couple of good sites for getting source modding/mapping questions answered are interlopers.net and mapcore.net

Some other similar mods I know of, Turtle already mentioned Insurgency, there's also Sands of War (which is set in the future) and Operation Desert Storm (which is obviously not set in Somalia lol).

On the subject of bots, I've played CSS sometimes and not even realized I've been playing with/against bots, and they often kick my butt.

Good luck, and I hope it comes together.

what game is this mod for? the engine looks like battlefield 2, but then again, i've never played half life 2, so i have nothing to compare it to really. :)

OK...the more I look at ET:QW the more I like it. Quaranteed large outdoor areas, flyable and driveable everything, a decent physics engine, amazing gfx (supporting a wide range of shaders including my beloved toon/cel shades) plus a better supply control mechanism than BF2. PPL have had some time to get used to the Doom3 engine and there are mods out for this engine and are fully supported by the developers.

Now then ...how do you fancy a game like this with a co-op mode? There doesn't look like there'll be one (it's been stated that there won't be BOT support) UNLESS...ppl make the developers sit up and take note. The difference is that this time the developers seem to be reading their forums and taking note of what is being said. I started a thread about this (and was contacted by one of the developers too!- imagne NOVA doing that!!!!!!!)) If you want to add your comments- you'll obviously need to register, but do help if you want a co-op mode for what will be a very teamplay-oriented game (and WILL spawn numerous modern-day battle mods).

Here's my thread...

But isn't a very nice game to play- looks kinda half finished....promising idea tho.

here are some tutorials for source that i like

Code snippets

Attaching VGUIScreens to viewmodels
An article explaining how to attach dynamic vguiscreens to a weapons viewmodel.

3 State Zoom For Any Weapon
I missed the zooming feature of the 357 that was in HL1 so I thought as a beginner tutorial I'd write a weapon zooming lesson. I then carried it out to a 3-stage zoom. This is for beginners and anyone curious as to my methods.

Making Bots Join A Team
Make the bots join whichever team you wish. So easy, even I can do it!

BTW i have a great character modeller working with me i am sure he can follow up with some ranger and somali's

Aha, Turtle, I was about to post those pictures! They just updated Gamespot.com with new pictures of that.

I would have to say I'm really looking forward to that game - that sort of story is something I've thought, "Why hasn't anyone done this?" since I was 8 years old.

SDK?

Also, I've heard the game is going to be a mod for Doom 3. I think the people that say that mean it's a mod like BHD is a mod of the C4 engine, and JO is a mod of the C4 engine, and so on - not like a fan-base mod of Doom 3. Is that correct??

I don't have Doom 3, that's why I'm asking; plus, it looks way too good to be a community mod.

Sounds like you could even cel shade the game... wow

ET:QW is a full on new game that uses the Doom 3 engine as its base. THe code has been substantialy rewritten
a) to favour large outdoor environments (via megatexture technology- imagine making a terrain as a texture, but the engine assigning properties to each part of the texture eg, more noise and grip on the asphalt sections, less traction and more slipping on the muddy sections....)
b) to improve the netcode- ultimately to allow 12x12 battles as opposed to the present situation with Q4 and D3
c) To allow for objectives-based gameplay in MP mode.

BTW- do post on my thread to promote the notion of having BOTS in the game (I actually think it WILL happen, but not in the first release....)
